Finding your network: Who were Harry Potter’s mentors? Who are yours?

Monday, March 22 5:00 PM – 6:00 PM Pacific Time

Join us for a magical discussion about mentoring and social support networks in the Harry Potter films and books. Then explore how to find your own network of mentors and developers – people who guide you, who protect you, who serve as role models. We will start by identifying the numerous people in Harry’s life who fulfilled mentoring roles for him: role models, counselors and protectors, surrogate parents etc. We will solemnly swear we are “up to no good” as we explore how each of us identifies our social networks and supporters. Who would be walking on your Marauders’ Map of your Menlo College world, and who is in your networks? Parents often come to mind first, but Harry was an orphan, so who filled roles of social and professional support? Some business models talk about creating a personal board of directors, and recently mentoring networks have been linked to the career lattice model of professional growth. When you leave the session you will have the tools to continue exploring your own Wizarding World of mentors and support.

Shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Xena: Warrior Princess emerged as surprise hits with devoted fans who cosplayed before it was cool, and even started their own conventions. In this presentation, you will learn more about 90s TV heroines, their progressive story arcs, and how these women continue to inspire new generations of fans.

Stitch-In for Social Change

Wednesday, March 24 7:00 PM Pacific Time

Needlepoint, knitting, and other craft projects aren’t typically what comes to mind when we think about activism but these domestic arts can serve as a form of passive protest and create spaces where individuals can come together and engage in meaningful conversations about pressing issues in society. As a lifetime crafter, the COVID-19 pandemic further brought out my once-forgotten love of cross-stitch – a simple, very easy to learn, form of embroidery. Join me for a workshop where I’ll provide you with your choice of a 2” x 2” pattern and teach you the basics while we discuss themes of feminism and intersectionality.

Not interested in embroidery but still want to engage in the conversation? Bring your knitting needles, crochet hooks, watercolor paints, whatever you want! Discussion is open to all.
