Student Spotlight: Yuliya Son ’13

Yuliya Son was born in Almaty, Kazakhstan, but raised in Russia after moving there at a young age. She graduated as Valedictorian from Music School, where she studied the piano, in 2005. Yuliya moved back to Almaty where she graduated from the Almaty International School in 2009.

Yuliya came to Menlo College on a suggestion from her brother-in-law, Daniar Rymzhanov ’94. After her first visit to Menlo College in 2006, Yuliya was convinced that this school had all the qualities that would make it the right option for her: a small business school, a remarkable location in the heart of Silicon Valley, a maritime climate, and a welcoming community.

Majoring in Business Management, she made the Dean’s List five times and discovered her interest in the field of law, which she plans to pursue after graduation. At Menlo Yuliya excelled academically and was involved in extracurricular activities such as the International and Outdoor clubs and was a member of the Allocation Board.

She developed valuable organizational skills working as an assistant in the Advancement Office. One of her responsibilities was helping Professor Pamela Gullard identify and gather materials for a history of Menlo to be published for the College’s 85th anniversary.
