President’s Day Celebration Launches Monday Speaker Series

On Monday, February 18, 2013, Menlo College welcomed Dr. Samy Alim, Associate Professor of Education and (by courtesy) Anthropology and Linguistics at Stanford University, to speak about his new book, Articulate While Black. The eventhonored both Black History Month and President's Day as Dr. Alim discussed issues of language and race and our nation's first black president.

Alim’s presentation marked the first in the Monday Speaker Series. The series, sponsored by the Academic and Student Affairs Office, gives students the chance to engage with scholars and learn about progressive research on global events and issues.

“Dr. Alim is a brilliant but accessible scholar who students enjoyed meeting and talking to,” said Melissa Michelson, Ph.D., Professor of Political Science at Menlo. “Articulate While Black is a fascinating book and a fascinating subject. I'm just delighted that Dr. Alim agreed to be our first speaker for the spring series.”

Menlo will also be welcoming Dr. Rhacel Salazar Parreñas from the University of California, on March 25, as well as Dr. Brandon Valeriano, Lecturer at the University of
