Menlo College Students Raise Awareness to Bridge the Gap

Bridge the Gap

Menlo College students are collecting donated school supplies for students of Redwood City Elementary Schools

(ATHERTON, CA/APRIL 17, 2019) Students of Redwood City Elementary Schools have been impacted by recent budget cuts. To raise awareness, Menlo College’s Human Rights in Global Perspective Class is hosting an event on campus called Bridge the Gap. Menlo College students are collecting supplies for Redwood City Elementary Schools and hosting a community-wide event with activities, refreshments, and guest speakers in the Russell Center on April 25th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Recent budget cuts are causing four schools, Fairoaks, Adelante, Hawes, and John Gill, to close and merge with other schools: Taft, Selby, Lane, Roosevelt, and Orion. Schools are being overly populated, making it difficult for them to obtain important supplies needed for their education such as paper, #2 pencils, dry erase markers, and tissues. This impacts the students as larger class sizes are being created, making it difficult for students already paying out of pocket for their classroom supplies.

To Bridge the Gap, Menlo College is asking for school supply donations for Redwood City Elementary School students. Donations are being collected now until April 25th and may be dropped off Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. in front of Room 466 at Brawner Hall. All are welcome to attend The Bridge the Gap event on April 25th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Menlo’s Russell Center featuring talks from impacted staff and parents, refreshments, and education related activities.
