Menlo College hosted the Third Annual Señor Carlos López Memorial Soccer Tournament on Saturday, September 10. The tournament brings alumni together on campus to play soccer while raising money for scholarships. This year, there were 26 players, cheered on by friends and family, for a total of more than 85 participants. Net proceeds from the event went to the Carlos López Endowed Scholarship Fund.

“This event is a way to remember Carlos López and keep his legacy in the forefront of people's minds,” said John Rooke, '88, who started the event in 2009 with Karl Buder, '66. “He was such a man of honor and treated students with such warmth, he was like a second father to many of us.” Other alumni on the event committee include Enrique Ybarra-Valdenebro, ‘91;  Alex Parr, ‘81; Andreas Strieve, ’86; and Victor Rico Gutierrez, ‘09.

Dr. López joined the Menlo College faculty in 1962 and coached soccer for many years. He served as President of Menlo College from 2004 to 2007, and continued his faculty role until his death in 2009.

The game was action-packed, right through the very end.

Alumni from as far away as Australia, Spain, and Latin America played in Saturday's memorial game. The score was tied in the last minutes of the game, until a penalty kick—driven in by Balta Vazquez, '07—gave the Green Team the win. The game was followed by a reception where Rooke and Menlo College President James Kelly both spoke, and the game's Best Goal and Most Valuable Player honors were awarded to Mark “Turbo” Ryan and Mike Sharabi, respectively. Afterwards, alumni stayed to cheer on the Menlo Oaks soccer team, which played Fresno Pacific on Wunderlich Field.

This year, alumni and students had a chance to once again experience Dr. López's traditional post-game barbecue. Eveleen López, his wife, welcomed players to the Lopez house for a revival of this time-honored celebration.
