Getting Ready for Midterms

With midterms just around the corner, students have two goals: ace the exams and keep the stress level down. Here are some tips which should make students’ lives easier and less stressful during this period.

One of the best ways to learn is having someone explain the material. The Peer Tutor Lab is designed to do just that, with 12 available tutors who cover over 70 different classes. It is free for all Menlo students, and is open from 7 to 9pm on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday in the Academic Success Center. Peer tutors also participate in Study Slam every Tuesday from 7 to 9pm in the Russell Center.

Before midterms begin, it is also a good practice to prepare a study plan for the week. The plan should include study breaks and enough time for sleep to recharge the body, otherwise, one’s ability to learn—not to mention performance on the exam—will drop significantly!

It is important to remember that one of the best sources for stress relief is exercise. Even a little walk can do wonders. With an abundance of distractions around, avoiding all-nighters, working fewer hours, and staying away from social networks will help students concentrate more on preparing for their midterms.

“Most importantly, go to class!” says testing and advising coordinator Judy Wasmann, “And when you are in class, pay attention. Take notes, listen to the professor, don't text, doodle or space out. Just doing that will help you tremendously when it's time for midterms and finals.”

Following these recommendations should help students cope with the burden of midterms. But the best advice of all might just be to remember—and repeat—this mantra: “Don’t panic! Keep things in perspective.” What’s the worst that can happen? Stress and fatigue will do much more damage than scarcity of knowledge.
