Join the Class of 2015

Now is a great time to start thinking about college, especially if you haven't had the chance to visit a college campus. It's important for students to get a feel for what life is like in a campus environment and to learn if expectations about the college experience can be met while living there.

It's also time to begin talking with parent(s) or guardian(s) about college costs and what's affordable. Encourage them to file their 2010 income tax returns as soon after the New Year as possible. Once they have filed their taxes, they'll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The 2011 form becomes available from the Federal Government after January 1 ( Completion of this form is necessary when applying for financial aid, regardless of applications being made for institutional grants or federal student aid. This form lets institutions and lending agencies know how much financial aid a student is eligible to receive.

For students living in California, there is a priority deadline to apply for the Cal Grant. The California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) is the state agency that administers and awards Cal Grants, which are need- and merit-based awards. California residents are required to file their FAFSA and GPA Verification Form before March 2nd to be considered for a Cal Grant for the upcoming academic year.
