Menlo Math Week Quantitative Skills Workshop

Dates: Thursday, August 11- Wednesday, August 17, 2016
(New Student Orientation begins Thursday, August 18)
Deadline to register: July 15, 2016

Students will be admitted on a rolling basis and registration will be capped at 20 total students. On-campus housing will be limited to 12 students.

Program Overview

Menlo is pleased to offer a math skills program for incoming first-year students, preceding New Student Orientation. The workshop will provide students with a low-stress environment to build math skills before embarking upon a college curriculum, and will provide students with insights into the importance of strong quantitative skills in business and psychology careers. This program will allow students currently enrolled in Math 90 (elementary algebra) for Fall 2016 to test out of this course, potentially becoming eligible to enroll in Math 101.

The workshop will focus on collaborative learning through problem-solving activities with minimal lecture content. Each day will be comprised of two 3-hr sessions: the morning session (9am-12pm) will focus on core mathematical skills and relationships; afternoon sessions (1-4pm) will center around group projects to reinforce concepts discussed earlier that day. Evening social outings will be planned each day, giving students opportunities to explore Menlo Park and Palo Alto, as well as to watch Menlo College Fall sports games. Weekend days will be spent on outings to San Francisco and to the the San Jose Tech Museum.

Fees: This program has been underwritten by the Trustee Scholarship Fund. Students will receive room and board and participation in all activities for a program fee of $100. The fee will be charged directly to students’ accounts, and is non-refundable.
