Math – Open Rank Position

Menlo College invites applicants for an open rank position in Math. The college seeks individuals with a strong background in teaching in the area of Math. Menlo College has built a unique math program geared toward students who have been underserved in K-12 math education. Courses are based on conceptual understanding rather than programming a procedural skill set. We focus on why techniques are done, where they came from, and why we do them.

Candidates should have a passion for conveying the conceptual part of mathematics, and be ready to participate in a creative environment. Curriculum development, assessment, and content creation all happen in a collaborative setting. The curriculum is limited to four main courses: remedial algebra, college algebra, intermediate algebra, and statistics with quantitative reasoning. Calculus is occasionally offered for students who previously have strong math backgrounds.
Menlo College has a math center, with which the faculty collaborate in order to maintain a system of institutional support ensuring that students do not fail out of isolation.

Menlo College is a diverse four-year undergraduate college with majors in business and psychology. The college is located in the heart of Silicon Valley which allows students a variety of internship experiences and real world learning. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers while integrating their studies within a liberal arts foundation. Menlo is a small but growing school (~775 enrollment) that offers small classes that facilitate faculty-student interactions. Menlo’s School of Business Administration is AACSB accredited.

Candidates should have a Master’s Degree or Ph.D. with previous college teaching experience (degree must be completed and awarded prior to appointment date).

Candidates are preferred who have teaching and/or research experience with a diverse student body, and who have experience in multicultural settings. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal skills, and be able to work in a collaborative and collegial environment.

The position requires undergraduate teaching in Math with secondary assignments in mentoring and advising undergraduate students, maintaining an active ongoing scholarship program in one’s area of specialty, and active ongoing engagement in shared governance and other service to campus and community.
