The ESL Learning Lab is designed for students writing and speaking English as a foreign language. The primary, but not exclusive, activity is to tutor writing students. The ESL Learning Lab provides consultations and tutoring following the policies of the Writing Center. Students enrolled in English 099 schedule regular consultations with the ESL Learning Lab tutors. Other students for whom English is a foreign language are also encouraged to make regular appointments.

The purpose of the Math Center is to provide tutoring to students in MTH 090 (Elementary Algebra), MTH 101 (Intermediate Algebra) and MTH 102 (College Algebra). A professional tutor is available at no cost on weekday afternoons, while student tutors who have done very well in math are available on selected evenings.

Students can get assistance with homework or help with reviewing for exams. Computers are available for work on the MyMathLab homework used in the sequence of Algebra courses. Students may also seek assistance with questions in Statistics, but not every tutor is qualified in this area.

Writing & Oral Communication Center

Located in Bowman Library, the Writing & Oral Communication Center offers tutoring and workshops to Menlo students working on any writing or speaking assignment and at any stage in the process—from brainstorming, thesis development, and outlining to revision and documentation. Students can sign up for a thirty-minute session with an English instructor or an experienced, trained peer tutor. Each session is tailored to the student’s concerns and may focus on grammar, organization, style, and/or structure.

Writing Tutoring

Students may drop in or book an appointment with one of our writing tutors online. Making an appointment in advance ensures that a tutor will be available. Please limit your appointments to one per day. We also see students on a first-come, first-serve basis during our evening drop-in hours.

TheWriting & Oral Communication Center now offers oral communication tutoring, including training in listening skills, interviewing, and the design, organization, and delivery of different types of presentations.  We will offer tips on effective visual aids such as Power Point, and techniques to deal with speech anxiety.  Presentations and interviews will be videotaped, so students can have direct feedback on their performance.
