How will I benefit from attending orientation?
Through the faculty, staff and student leaders you will meet all of the other new students attending Menlo for the first time, as well as transfers, learn how to capitalize on the Menlo Advantage and have fun!
What is the retreat site like?
Walker Creek Ranch is a secluded, retreat spot located in West Marin County, north of San Francisco. It has a wonderful diverse habitat and an abundance of wildlife. We will sleep in cabins with bunk beds and there are centrally located bathhouses. Additionally due to the rolling hills and location cell phones do not work at the ranch. However there are 2 pay phones available. For more information check out their website at walkercreekranch.org.
What happens if I am late for the bus?
You will miss the retreat and be charged $150! We load the bus at 8:30am on Friday morning and we will not wait for late folks.
Can I smoke cigarettes?
Smoking is only allowed outside in designated areas: never inside any buildings.
What does Menlo provide?
Menlo pays for transportation, food, lodging and naturalists to escort us on hikes, challenge courses, canoeing and swimming at the retreat site. Additionally the Resident Assistants and Student Government members will be team leaders to assist you through activities with Staff and Faculty Resident Fellows, intended to create community involvement.
What do I need to bring to the retreat?
Bring your soap, toothbrush/paste, towel, sunscreen, and swimming suit, walking shoes, a pillow, blanket or SLEEPING BAG. Dress is practical and casual; be prepared for cool weather at night and hot weather at day. Musical instruments, a camera, music CD's are optional. Pets, alcohol and illegal drugs are not allowed.
What is the food like?
The food at Walker Creek Ranch is much like it is at Menlo. Fresh, organic or regionally grown produce and delicious home-made meals will be served. Vegetarian meals will be available and any items containing pork will be marked.
What happens if I have an emergency?
Please make sure that you have filled out your emergency contact information with Student Affairs. We also need to have copies of your medical insurance on file. If you have not signed up before Orientation for our insurance, Aetna will be available on Thursday, August 20 at Menlo.
