Summary Job Description

Menlo College is a residential campus that houses almost two-thirds of the enrolled undergraduate population on site. The Student Affairs Office is looking for a responsible, dedicated professional to join the team in the role of Director of Residential Life & Judicial Affairs. Under the supervision of the Dean of Student Affairs, the successful candidate will be an innovative and collaborative leader who will be expected to guide all facets of a residential life program for approximately 500 students. A residential life environment that is of a high quality and is responsive to student needs and priorities is essential to the success of the Student Affairs program at Menlo College. This is a 12-month, live-in position.

General Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement effective residence hall policies and programs that foster an environment conducive to learning and positive community development
  • Develop and implement training and mentoring for professional residence life staff, providing supervision, structure, guidance and encouragement, with the specific focus of empowering both professional and student staff as front line workers in student development
  • Create departmental goals, coordinate assessment efforts, and establish student learning outcomes
  • Develop and coordinate a programming system for the residential community to ensure a diversity of program offerings in the halls, including programs sponsored by Resident Assistants, Resident Fellows, the Student Government Association, and other entities on campus; programming should be based on a philosophy of wellness, focusing on providing an educational atmosphere in the halls and building community
  • Oversee the basic administration and assignment process of residential students, including returning resident process, and winter/summer break housing
  • Oversee the room change process and maintenance of records regarding re-assignments, occupancy records, and other assigned functions
  • Manage the department budget
  • Work collaboratively with facilities management to ensure all housing needs are effectively addressed
  • Participate on the crisis management team and represent residential life on other committees
  • Manage the Student Affairs module within the Jenzabar EX program; maintain the integrity of the system and access to its information
  • Participate in the planning and execution of a variety of College-wide programs, including orientation, admissions programs, homecoming/alumni weekends, student involvement, etc.
  • Create marketing materials in collaboration with marketing team to assist in enrollment efforts
  • Maintain an up-to-date license agreement, housing applications, change of housing status, student handbook, and other applicable forms necessary for communication about Residential Life both off and on line
  • Oversee the campus judicial process to hold accountable all students and adjudicate those who allegedly violate the Code of Student Conduct; in special cases, formulate a Judicial Board to hear cases and finalize reports for review by the Dean of Student Affairs
  • Provide on-call coverage to respond and address residential life emergencies
  • Assume other duties as assigned by the Dean of Student Affairs

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, or related field
  • A minimum of five years of residential life experience, post-master’s degree
  • Demonstrated supervisory and management skills
  • Knowledge of student development theory and ability to integrate that knowledge into a clear, consistent programmatic and supervisory plan
  • Ability to apply principles of organizational leadership and develop a positive rapport with students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to work in a collegial fashion and enhance key campus partnerships with other campus offices; the Director interacts frequently with Admissions, Athletics, Wellness & Disability Services, Facilities, and Security
  • Demonstrated well developed writing and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and autonomous
  • Demonstrated experience working in a multicultural environment and desire to positively contribute to fostering an inclusive environment
  • Available to work on call duty on some evenings and weekends
  • Demonstrated administrative experience in a Student Affairs program
