VITA Program Returns to Menlo
February 18, 2014:
Need to get your taxes done? The VITA program is back! The Menlo College Accounting club is offering its services and providing free income tax return preparation for the Menlo Community through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, sponsored by the United Way and the IRS. This program was introduced last year to great success.
Through this program, Menlo provides an opportunity for low and middle income taxpayers (generally those with incomes less than $52,000) to have their taxes prepared without cost by well-trained and certified individuals. Last year, 11 students prepared the tax returns for 60 clients who together received over $27,000 in refunds. This year, the number of volunteers has doubled from 11 to 22 Menlo students, who underwent 24 hours of training and had to pass a series of rigorous exams in order to be part of the program.
