Keeping Traditions Alive

Menlo College will host the 21st Annual Lu’au on March 24. The Lu’au is one of Menlo’s longest traditions as well as one of the biggest events that attracts hundreds of guests every spring. This year’s theme is "Pupukahi i holomua", which means "unite to move forward".
"The Lu’au keeps the Hawaiian tradition alive," said Mary Robins, Director of Career Services and the Hawai’i Club advisor. "We have authentic Hawaiian food and authentic dances performed by our students. Professional dancer Martini Eke and student leaders teach members of the club how to dance. It’s really a collaborative effort and a very fun family event."
Members of the Hawai’I Club spent six months preparing the show, particularly learning traditional Polynesian dances, including Hawaii Hula, Tahitian dance, Maori dance, and Fiji dance. This year, Lu’au will also feature Huko Zuttermeister, a professional musician, who performs most of the music for students’ dances. During the show, guests can try authentic Hawaiian buffet that is specially prepared by Sodexo’s Hawaiian chef.
