Menlo College President, Dr. G. Timothy Haight, will honor Robert (Bob) Lurie, '46 with an honorary Doctoral Degree in Business Administration at the 2010 Commencement Ceremony. Mr. Lurie, a former trustee of Menlo College, is a renowned real estate developer in San Francisco and former owner and President of the San Francisco Giants franchise of Major League Baseball (1976-1990).
Born January 18, 1929, Bob is the son of San Francisco financier Louis R. and Babette Lurie. After graduation from Menlo High School in Atherton, CA, Bob matriculated to Northwestern University in Evanston, II, where he earned his B.S. degree in business administration. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953 before returning home to enter the San Francisco business community.
Upon his father's passing in 1972, Bob Lurie assumed the presidency of the Lurie Company, a San Francisco and Chicago-based real estate company specializing in commercial properties. In 1976, a Lurie Company subsidiary purchased a 50% interest in the San Francisco Giants Baseball Club to thwart the team's imminent move to Toronto. The remaining 50% interest was purchased in 1979. Under Lurie, the team won the National League Western Division title in 1987 and the National League Championship in 1989. The team was sold to a group of local investors in 1993.
Bob Lurie's lifelong dedication to business, civic and community affairs in his native San Francisco have been in keeping with the highest traditions of the venerable Lurie family and its historic impact on the City's cosmopolitan character. In addition to his duties with The Lurie Company, he serves as President of the Louis R. Lurie Foundation. Bob is married to the former Connie Clark, who is also active in a wide variety of civic, social and charitable endeavors.
Menlo College, President G. Timothy Haight, is pleased to recognize Mr. Lurie's outstanding accomplishments in business and exemplary service to the community and Menlo College through the conferral of a Degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa, the highest fellowship of its scholars, professors, and alumni. In a statement from the President, Dr. Haight stated, "Bob Lurie is living proof that an individual with a winning personality can be a winner in Business, too."
Bob enjoys travelling and is an avid golfer. His fondness for this sport led to the co-development of the Stevinson Ranch Golf Course, located in Stevinson, CA, and participation in the investment group that purchased the Pebble Beach Golf Club. He belongs to the Bohemian Club, Sharon Heights Country Club, the Vintage Club of Indian Wells, CA, Burlingame Country Club, Tehama Golf Club, Carmel, CA, and is a National Trustee for Northwestern University.
Menlo College's Commencement ceremony will be held May 8, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Main Quad on the College campus in Atherton, CA.
