The Menlo College Gay Straight Alliance invited Gregg Cassin, a gay father and HIV positive individual for over 20 years, as part of its Ally Week festivities on October 17, 2012. Cassin told his story to a crowd of 40 Menlo students in the Fireside Lounge, which had been turned into a G.S.A. Ally exhibit with various materials the club collected throughout the week.
"Gregg is simply an amazing individual whose story needed to be heard," said Michael Kukahiwa-Haruno, Menlo College Gay Straight Alliance President. "His story and message truly fit our club’s mission and goal for this year, which is to raise awareness and educate fellow students on the importance of allies and support in one’s life."
Cassin has been speaking in schools and public venues about gay awareness and diversity since the early 1980’s. At Menlo, he talked about the importance of his family during his times of struggle and how their motivation and support got him to where he is today. The night ended with everyone circling up while joining hands and swaying to the song, "Somewhere Over the Rainbow."
