THESSOLONIKI, GREECE — Menlo College junior-to-be Katherine Fulp-Allen was dominant in earning a gold medal while sister Sara Fulp-Allen (Menlo '07) settled for silver in women's freestyle wrestling at the 8th Annual University World Championships July 10-11.
Katherine defeated Russia's Olga Gileva by fall to take home gold at 51 kg/112.25 pounds before Sara fell to Nami Vchida of Japan, 3-0, 1-0, in a tough-luck finale at 48 kg/105.5 pounds the following night when a video review showed that she stepped out of bounds. Their father, Menlo women's wrestling coach Lee Allen, was an assistant coach for the women's freestyle team in Greece.
The victory over Gileva was Katherine's third convincing result in as many matches. Katherine began the tournament with a 6-0, 6-0, win over Brigita Bermmane of Latvia, then dispatched Maki Fujimo of Japan by fall to advance to the gold medal match.
Sara advanced through her bracket in similar fashion, defeating Lzie Vanaga of Latvia, 6-0, 6-0, and beating Alana King of Canada by fall after dropping the first period to her North American counterpart, 4-3.
The Fulp-Allen's also helped the seven-woman U.S. squad win the team title. Stephany Lee (72kg/158.5 pounds) and Elena Pirozhkov (67 kg/147.5 pounds) each won gold while Alaina Berube (63 kg/138.75 pounds) and Othella Lucas (59 kg/130 pounds) earned bronze medals for the U.S. Chelynne Pringle (55 kg/121 pounds) finished fifth.
Sara, who finished third in her weight class at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials last month is currently training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The sisters qualified for the University World Championships by winning their respective weight classes at the University Nationals in April.
