Menlo College and Ngee Ann Polytechnic in Singapore recently wrapped up California Challenge '09, a immersive educational experience that gave some of Singapore's brightest young minds the opportunity to study business, liberal arts, and American culture on the beautiful Menlo College campus and the surrounding San Francisco Bay Area.
Below is a letter from Mun Kwok On, Director of Student Development and Alumni Relations at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, to Menlo College Dean of Enrollment Management David Placey and Professor of English and Humanities Lowell Pratt.
Dear David and Professor Lowell,
Our team has been in Menlo for a week since we arrived on 14 June. We are very grateful to you, David, and your colleagues like Cynthia, Puli and many senior students for the very warm welcome the care and support given to us. It certainly help us to settle down very quickly. Our thanks to your President, Dr. Timothy Haight and many other Menlo staff for joining us at the Welcome BBQ.
We appreciate Dale and Ivana for driving us around - to the site of Habitat for Humanity, to the Golden Bridge and to the Mexican restaurant. The sumptuous dinner was a great way to end the long day.
Tonight, we enjoyed ourselves by immersing into American baseball culture, the cheering and booing (not forgetting the fast food!) Our appreciation to all of you who accompanied us. It was an experience of a life time!
Thank you, Prof Lowell - our students are challenged intellectually by your classes which they enjoyed very much. They have been exceptionally attentive inspite of the 4 hour session, diligent in their readings, submission of response papers, essays etc. Credit must be given to you for your engaging style of teaching, warmth, affirmation and sincerity shown towards our students.
I have updated my Principal, Mr Chia Mia Chiang on how well the California Challenge has been progressing. He would like me to convey his sincere thanks to Menlo College and best wishes to all of you.
It has been a great week and we continue to look forward to next week program.
The attached photos certainly show our happy faces!
