Civil Rights Essay Contest Winners Announced

Menlo College faculty, the Student Affairs Office, and the Black Student Union (BSU) collaborated to host the Civil Rights Essay Competition Reception on January 30. The event celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and featured the Freshman Essay contest winners, who presented their essays to the audience.

Shakila Caldwell, first place victor, shared an emotional essay about the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender movement and how it has directly impacted her family. Brenda Rivera and Jin Bian won second and third place respectively and shared their experiences with immigration and Latino rights.

The audience was also treated to guest speaker Chike Nwoffiah, Adjunct Professor at Menlo College and President at Rhesus Media Group. He discussed the African-American Civil Rights movement and how Dr. King was and remains a great influence in our lives today.
