| 1.
Who is WOODIE?
WOODIE is Menlo College’s Web-Oriented Online Digital Information
Education Program. WOODIE is a self-paced online tutorial designed
to help Menlo students learn basic research skills. It fulfills the
Library Research Skills requirement of the General Education Curriculum.
WOODIE contains three modules that cover selecting appropriate sources;
searching library databases and the Internet; and evaluating and citing
information. WOODIE is required in a student’s first year of
enrollment in order to ensure that Menlo students have a solid foundation
of information competency skills early in their academic careers.
|
| 2.
Who uses WOODIE?
WOODIE is designed to introduce Menlo lower-division undergraduates
to the research process and is available to all students and faculty
through Bowman Library’s Web site (http://library.menlo.edu).
WOODIE is required of all Menlo students during their first year of
enrollment.
|
| 3.
What are the GE requirements for WOODIE?
WOODIE must be completed by the end of a student’s first year
of enrollment. This requirement went into effect for incoming students
beginning Fall 2005. Students will not be able to register for their
second year classes until they have successfully completed and passed
WOODIE. A hold will be put on the record of any student attempting
to register without having fulfilled the WOODIE requirement.
|
| 4.
Do all three WOODIE modules have to be taken at once? How long do
they take?
WOODIE is self-paced, and students may do one module and return at
another time to do the others. Each module generally takes 20 to 30
minutes for students to complete.
|
5.
Do students have to pass WOODIE?
Yes. Just as all Menlo classes have criteria for their successful
completion, students must pass each of WOODIE’s three quizzes
with a score of at least 75%. After students answer each quiz question,
they receive immediate feedback on their answer. Students may retake
the quizzes as often as they like in order to improve their scores.
|
| |
6.
Does WOODIE have to be taken in the Library?
No. WOODIE is accessible 24/7 from any computer with an Internet connection.
Students may use their own computers or the computer workstations
or laptops in Bowman Library. WOODIE can be found at http://library.menlo.edu.

7.
How does Bowman Library know that students have taken WOODIE?
Students are responsible for submitting their quiz results to the
Library by e-mailing them to Linda Smith using the Submit button on
the Quiz Summary pages.
|
|
| |
8.
How do students ensure that WOODIE appears on their list of completed
courses?
Students are responsible for submitting WOODIE quiz summaries to Bowman
Library, as described in Question 7, above, and are advised to keep
copies for their own records also. Bowman Library works with both
Academic Advising and the Registrar’s Office to ensure that
a student’s academic record is updated upon successful completion
of WOODIE.

9.
How can faculty effectively use WOODIE in their courses?
Freshmen course faculty are encouraged to make WOODIE a requirement
in their courses. Students complete WOODIE on their own time and can
submit their quiz results to faculty as well as to Bowman Library.
The tutorial can be used across all disciplines. Faculty are encouraged
to talk with Linda Smith, Information and Instructional Services Librarian,
about ways to integrate WOODIE into classes.

10.
Does WOODIE replace Library instruction?
No! The librarians at Bowman Library continue to offer both general
and course-related Library instruction for all faculty wanting to incorporate
a Library session into their courses. Library sessions related to specific
research assignments are especially useful. WOODIE provides a foundation
upon which students will build their information competency skills during
their years at Menlo.
