International Trade Research Guide

What is International Trade?

International trade concerns the exchange of goods and services between countries through exports and imports. International trade statistics, narrative overviews, reports, and more can be found in a variety of sources in Bowman Library. This guide focuses on the economic side of the trade; for hands-on information about exporting use our Exporter's Research Guide.

Getting Started

Before beginning your research, spend some time thinking about the topic at hand and how to develop a search strategy. Consider the following:

  • Are you looking for information about region, country or industry?
  • Do you need historical or current data? What's essential to your research: statistical data or narrative descriptions?
  • Do you need only information about a particular aspect of international business, for example, export, FDI, multilateral agreements, trade regulations?

Finding General or Background Information on International Trade

Consider beginning your research with sources where trade-related information is only a part of the whole picture, provided within a context of demographic, socio-economic and political data. Though international trade data is widely available in electronic form, in databases and on Web sites, do not overlook print resources. Below are some examples:

OECD Factbook 2005 - R HC 10 .O34
OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) Factbook 2005 is a comprehensive statistical annual on worldwide economies. It contains more than 100 indicators (including descriptive information, statistical tables and graphics) from areas like economy, education, energy, environment, foreign aid, health and quality of life, industry, information and communications, population/labor force, trade and investment, taxation, public expenditure and R&D. Full text online access is also available for Menlo students and faculty through Bowman Library's subscription.

Statistical Yearbook: Forty-eighth Issue - R HA 12.5.U63
Based on data compiled by the United Nations Statistical Division from over 40 different international and national sources. The present issue contains series covering 1992-2001 or 1993-2003.

General Government Accounts/Comptes des Administrations Publiques - R HC79.I5 N375

CIA – The World Factbook in XreferPlus
The information in the Factbook is arranged by country but also categorized by topic. For any of the listed countries there is data on factors like GDP, household income, investment, industries and debt.

Encyclopedia of World Trade: From Ancient Times to the Present - R HF1373 .W67 2005

Encyclopaedia Britannica
Explore the “World Data” section: compare countries (scroll in the “Options” menu to “Foreign Trade” category) or see at a glance lists (numbering 10, 25, 50 or 100) of highest or lowest ranking countries in regard to foreign trade.

Finding Information in Books

Searching ROSIE Using Keywords

Search for keywords like “international trade” or "export," paired with "encyclopedias" or "handbooks." Examples of titles, listed above in this guide, include OECD Factbook and Statistical Yearbook. For a more focused search try "trade" or "business" and the name of the country or region.

Searching ROSIE by Subject

The following is a short list of international trade subjects – remember to explore the “related subjects” links.

Browsing Call Numbers

Because books are arranged on the Library’s shelves by subject, browsing the library stacks in the call number areas suggested below can also be useful. You can get additional ideas from a book's table of contents or index. You can browse book records online through ROSIE, but remember that only records of recently published books list tables of contents and none lists an index.

The majority of international trade books are in the HF 1000 - HF 4999 section.

Finding Information About International Trade Using Research Databases

Bowman Library subscribes to many Web-based databases where you will find newspaper, magazine and scholarly journal articles. Ones that are particularly useful for researching international trade are listed below. See Searching Electronic Resources Effectively for guidelines on making the most of your search.

The National Trade Data Bank (NTDB) contains the complete text of U.S. government publications. You will find here international market research materials, trade opportunities information, labor trends reviews, reports on best markets and industry sectors, and a national export directory. One of the sections, International Trade Library, has reports by sector, region and country.

ProQuest
Search ProQuest for business articles published in scholarly, trade and general interest periodicals. Explore the drop-down menus and “More Search Options” to broaden or narrow your search, for example, to a particular company, product, person or industry. Note that after you run your search you can further limit the results to articles that were published in trade publications or scholarly journals.
