Exporter's Research Guide

What is the Exporter's Research Guide?

This guide, unlike the much broader International Trade Research Guide, focuses on direct and practical information sources covering the entire export process: from the decision about distribution method and target markets, through documentation to executing the transaction.

Getting Started

Before beginning your research, spend some time thinking about the topic at hand and how to develop a search strategy. Consider the following:

  • Are you looking for information about region, country or industry?
  • What type of information do you need: statistical data, export regulations, legal considerations, marketing strategies, useful contact lists?
  • Do you need examples of documentation?

Finding General or Background Information for Exporters

Though export-related information is widely available in electronic form, in databases and on Web sites, do not overlook print resources. Consider subject guides and encyclopedias - here are some examples:

Exporter's Encyclopaedia - R HF 3011 .E9
This comprehensive guide to export markets of countries worldwide includes trade regulations, marketing data, legal requirements, transportation, key contacts and more.

A Basic Guide to Exporting - R HF1416.5 .B37 1996
This is an introductory text on all aspects of exporting, from the export plan through legal considerations to shipping and after sales services. A Basic Guide to Exporting is a perfect companion to the Exporter’s Encyclopaedia.

International Business Transactions - R KF1976 .F65 2002
This compendium of international business transactions provides, among other things, examples of legal documents, information on customs valuation, corrupt practices law, transfer of technology and protection against loss of investment.

Guide to Export Import Basics - K3941 .G85 2003
This handbook, written by experts from the International Chamber of Commerce, covers the entire process of international trade – from preparation of the sales contract to arranging for international transport.

A Short Course in International Marketing: Approaching and Penetrating the Global Marketplace - HF1416 .C87 1998
A concise introduction to marketing and its application to international business, containing cultural analysis, research planning and a marketing plan outline.

Finding Information in Books

Searching ROSIE Using Keywords

Start with "export* and market*" ( the asterisk (*) allows you to search for words with different endings). For a more focused search try adding the name of the country or region.

Searching ROSIE by Subject

Searching by Library of Congress Subject Headings allows you to do a more focused search for your topic; remember to explore the “related subjects” links. Some subject headings that may be useful include:

Browsing Call Numbers

Because books are arranged on the Library’s shelves by subject, browsing the library stacks in the call number areas suggested below can also be useful. You can get additional ideas from a book's table of contents or index. You can browse book records online through ROSIE, but remember that only records of recently published books list tables of contents and none lists an index.

One of the sections, International Trade Library, has reports by sector, region and country. It also contains an online version of A Basic Guide to Exporting, an introductory text on all aspects of exporting, from the export plan through legal considerations to shipping and after sales services. A Basic Guide to Exporting is a perfect companion to the Exporter’s Encyclopaedia (see "Background" section in this guide).

ProQuest
Search ProQuest for business articles published in scholarly, trade and general interest periodicals. Explore the drop-down menus and “More Search Options” to broaden or narrow your search, for example, to a particular company, product, person or industry. Note that after you run your search you can further limit the results to articles that were published in trade publications or scholarly journals.
