What's New @ Bowman Library?

Bowman Library Resources Linked Through Google Scholar
Spring 2007

By expanding our implementation of WebBridge, the Library's OpenURL Resolver, Bowman Library's electronic and print journal holdings are now fully accessible to students and faculty conducting their research in Google Scholar.

To be sure the Menlo College links appear in Google Scholar results, users need to use Google Scholar's "Scholar Preferences" settings to select Menlo College as a "Library Link". After selecting "Scholar Preferences", enter "Menlo" in the Library Links Search box: and click on "Find Library".

Select the "Menlo College Full Text" option, then Save your Settings (The Ingenta Connect option is not required).

Now, when you complete a search, any titles for which Menlo has the full text available will include a "Menlo College Full Text: link.

When you select the Menlo College Full Text link, a new window will open, providing options for accessing the full text of the article, whether through Proquest, Wilson Select Plus, other research databases or ROSIE, the Library Catalog. If no full-text is available, you may request an article for delivery via Interlibrary loan by selecting that option (Reminder, students must have faculty OK to request articles).

Electronic Course Reserves and WebBridge Go Live!
Spring 2007

Bowman Library added two new services through ROSIE, The Library Catalog to support the classroom and research needs of the Menlo College faculty and students.

Electronic Course Reserves (E-Reserves)

E-Reserves allows faculty to place electronic files of class readings, selected articles, syllabi, video or audio files, and even links to web-based resources on reserve for their classes. E-Reserves can be linked through an instructor's IQ Web page, an individual course web page, or accessed directly through ROSIE. All copyright-protected materials are restricted for use by the students enrolled in the course.

The first semester of E-Reserves has gone very well! The flexibility, controlled access and 24-hour availability of the materials have all been noted as extremely helpful by the faculty and students using the service.

WebBridge

WebBridge is Bowman Library's OpenURL Resolver. It allows faculty and students to pass their searches, and even subject headings or authors from records in ROSIE, to additional databases without ever leaving ROSIE or keying another search query. WebBridge is presently in its first phase of implementation, with access set up for such resources as Encyclopedia Britannica, Gale Virtual Reference Library, Oxford Reference Online, and even Google and Yahoo!

Implementation of WebBridge will continue through the Spring 2007 semester. Links to Proquest and First Search are planned, as well as links into ROSIE from databases such as Google Scholar.

WebBridge can be activated by clicking on the "Click Here for More Information on Your Topic" logo on any browse screen or record display in ROSIE.

Should you need any assistance with these or any of ROSIE's services, or if you would just like a tour to get started, please don't hesitate to contact one of our Reference Librarians. We are always ready to help!

ROSIE Gets a New Home
March 2006

On March 23, ROSIE, the Library server, was moved to a new, secure server enclosure that will provide much needed security, environmental controls and earthquake safety for the Library's database. The move to the new enclosure required downtime of less than one hour, after many months of planning by the Library and with the help of the Office of Information Technology.

ROSIE Receives a Hardware Upgrade and a New Index
December 2005-February 2006

After a long service on its old DEC server, ROSIE received a brand new Sun server in December 2005. The new server increased the Library's processing and storage capabilities more than 10-fold! The server upgrade was the first piece in ROSIE's Millennium upgrade.

Following the server upgrade, ROSIE's indexes were updated, with the new Advanced Keyword Index added in February, 2006. The new index allows searchers to retrieve records using terms from almost any field in the record and to pre-limit searches by location, language, or format. The Advanced keyword index can be found at http://rosie.menlo.edu/search/X.

These two changes will soon be followed by new services for Electronic Course Reserves, and the ability to access Research Databases such as Proquest from within ROSIE. These new services are scheduled for availability by Fall 2006.

The Historical New York Times Available at Menlo College
December 2005

Bowman Library has added the Historical New York Times to its suite of more than 30 Research Databases available to Menlo College students and faculty. The Historical New York Times database provides searching and access to the full text of this newspaper from 1851 through 2002. Access to recent issues of the New York Times is available via Proquest.

New Wireless Access -- Coming Soon!

October 2005

Thanks to the efforts of Menlo's Office of Information Technology, Bowman Library will be added to the campus wireless network this Fall. Along with other key areas on campus, including the Dining Hall, students will be able to bring their own laptops into the Library and connect via secure proxy server to the campus network, accessing their own folders, campus resources and printers.

For the Library, this new access will expand on the existing secure wireless network and allow students to use either the Library's circulating laptop computers, or their own laptops with their own wireless network cards.

Stay tuned for more information on this exciting new project!

Three New Databases Available for Menlo College Faculty and Students
August 2005

Bowman Library has added three new research databases for use by Menlo College faculty and students who are conducting course-related or personal research.

Corbis Images for Education : This unique archive of approximately 400,000 images covering fine art, world history, nature, science, space and commercial stock collections allows Menlo faculty and students to search, view and download images for a wide range of academic purposes, including class presentations, course web sites, and research papers. The Corbis database also includes 200,000 images from the Bettman Archive and 10,000 images from its Fine Art Collection of paintings, sculpture and architecture. The College's license allows for two simultaneous users of this database. If you cannot access Corbis immediately, please try again shortly.

NBER : Hosted by the National Bureau of Economic Research, NBER is Bowman Library's first economics database. This fully searchable repository provides access to the full text of working papers and archives dating back to 1973, as well as Economic Indicators and Releases, the Economic Report of the President, and the NBER Digest. Menlo faculty and students may also register on the site individually to receive e-mail updates and newsletters.

XreferPlus : XreferPlus is a new type of database for Bowman Library. This database of full-text ready-reference sources allows users to search both within and across subject areas. Unique features of this resource include a concept map feature, access to the 200,000 fine art images of the Bridgeman Art Library Archive, enhanced tables for both the CIA World Factbook and the U.S. Census 2000 State & County Statistical QuickFacts, as well as cross references for every citation matched to a search query.

The addition of these three databases brings the total number of electronic research databases available to the Menlo community to 28. All of the databases can be accessed by title or by subject. Should you need any assistance with any of these databases, or if you would just like a tour to get started, please don't hesitate to contact one of our Reference Librarians. We are always ready to help!

WOODIE Joins ROSIE
September 2005

The Bowman Librarians spent part of their summer preparing the Library’s new online research skills tutorial. WOODIE, the brainy cousin of our campus mascot, Oakie the Squirrel, will make his debut Fall semester and take his place on the Bowman Library Web site with ROSIE, the Library’s online catalog. The Web-based tutorial will provide Menlo students with information literacy skills in three areas: selecting appropriate sources of information; searching
library databases and the Internet; and evaluating and citing information. Successful completion of WOODIE will be required of all freshmen by the end of their first year. WOODIE will soon be available at http://www.menlo.edu/library.

Bowman Library Receives Funding from Koret Foundation to Improve Gateway
October 2004 - August 2005

After receiving a generous grant from the Koret Foundation, Bowman Library has begun replacing outdated computers and adding new equipment to improve student access within the Library Gateway.

The first steps in this process were the replacement of the old printer and computer monitors.

After many years of hard work, the Library's printer was replaced with a new, Hewlett Packard printer that provides auto-duplexing and prints up to 50ppm.

In addition, the old computer monitors were replaced with new 17" and one new 19" flat panel monitors, providing students with better image viewing as well as more desk space for books and papers.

Finally, during the Summer of 2005, all of the old computer CPU's were replaced with new, Dell Optiplex GX-280 low-profile computers. Before September, two additional computers and monitors will be added to the gateway, providing 12 full-service workstations for Menlo students, faculty and friends to use in the Library. The new and replaced computers, coupled with the flat-panel monitors, provide not only the best available technology for our students, but their smaller size means that there is much more room available for students to spread out, making the Library not only the best place to conduct research, but also an optimal location for compiling notes and writing papers, complete with Reference Librarians to help at every step!
