If you require a book or periodical article that Bowman Library does not own, you may use Interlibrary Loan (ILL) to obtain the material from another library. This service is available to all Menlo College students, full-time and adjunct faculty, and staff.
Materials available through Interlibrary Loan include books, book chapters, dissertations, and periodical articles. Periodical articles and book chapters are usually supplied in photocopy format. However, it is generally not possible to borrow entire issues of periodicals. We cannot borrow audio/visual materials such as CDs and videos.
We will not borrow materials that are owned by Bowman Library, including electronic books (NetLibrary, etc.), unless our copy is missing. Please check the Book & Media Catalog carefully before filling out a request. If the item you are looking for is not on the shelves, you may wish to place a hold on the title. Be sure to contact one of the librarians if you cannot find an item you need or if you wish to place a hold.
Filling Out the Form
It is important that you supply as much information as possible to avoid mistakes in filling requests. Incomplete forms will not be processed. When requesting periodical articles, book chapters, or dissertations, please list the source of your citation, i.e., ProQuest, Lexis-Nexis, etc.
We act on your request immediately. The request is sent by computer network to libraries throughout the United States. The response time from other libraries varies, as does the mailing time. We suggest allowing 2 to 10 days for articles and somewhat longer for books.
You will be notified as soon as your Interlibrary Loan item arrives. It will be placed at the Circulation Desk for pick up.
The loan period for books is usually 2 to 3 weeks from the time the book arrives, depending on the due date that is set by the lending library. Photocopied material belongs to the borrower and does not have to be returned.
It is usually possible to request one renewal on a book borrowed through ILL. A renewal request will generally extend the due date by two weeks. However, requests for renewal must be submitted at least 3 days prior to the due date. Please contact Anne Linvill to request any renewals. Delays in returning book loans from other libraries may jeopardize future Interlibrary Loan borrowing privileges. Any overdue fines and/or lost book fees imposed by the lending library are the responsibility of the borrower.
Borrowed materials should be returned on or before the due date directly to a librarian or student worker at the Bowman Library Circulation Desk. Interlibrary Loan materials should never be placed in any of the book drops. The borrower is responsible for the item until it is physically returned to a Bowman Library employee. Photocopies of requested articles are the property of the borrower and do not need to be returned.
Fines for overdue ILL materials are based on fees assessed by the lending library. Replacement fees will be assessed when the item has been overdue for one month. At that time, the Library assumes the book has been lost and will request that the borrower pay for the cost of the item as well as the cost of processing its replacement.
