Interlibrary Loan - Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay for the item?

Interlibrary loans will be subsidized up to $15.00 per item. If the cost exceeds this amount, you will be notified before the order is placed.

What is the loan period for Interlibrary Loan materials?

The loan period for books is usually 2 to 3 weeks, depending on the due date that is set by the lending library. Photocopied material does not have to be returned.

Can materials be renewed if I need to keep them longer?

It is sometimes possible to request one renewal on a book borrowed through ILL. The paperwork accompanying the book will indicate if the item can or cannot be renewed. A renewal request will generally extend the due date by two weeks. However, requests for renewal must be submitted 7 days prior to the due date. We will not accept requests for renewal of items that are already overdue. Delays in returning book loans from other libraries may jeopardize future interlibrary loan borrowing privileges. Overdue fines and lost book fees will be assessed for ILL materials.

What materials can I order?

Periodical articles and books.

How long does it take to get my requested materials?

The average request takes approximately two weeks, but books coming from out-of-state may take longer.

How do I return ILL materials?

Borrowed materials should be returned on or before the due date to the Bowman Library Circulation Desk. Interlibrary loan materials should never be placed in any of the book drops. You are responsible for the item until it is physically returned to the Bowman Library Circulation Desk. Photocopies of requested articles do not need to be returned.

What materials are not available through ILL?

Audio/visual materials such as CD's and videos.

What limitations are placed on periodical article requests?

    1. Due to copyright infringement guidelines we must not request more than five articles from any periodical title during a calendar year. The five articles are limited to those published within the last five years. Therefore if a student requests an article published six years ago (or older), there is no restriction.
    2. If we subscribe to a periodical and we have incomplete holdings, we are NOT restricted to five requests per year.
    3. We cannot request an entire issue, only a particular article.
