Research Databases
Biography in Context - Biographies on people including athletes, coaches, and broadcasters. Search by name or sport in the upper right search box or browse the Athletes category on the home page.
CQ (Congressional Quarterly) Researcher - Research reports on current and controversial topics; most contain a Chronology section that's useful for the history of a topic. Search for topics such as gender equity, high school sports, and Olympic Games.
Credo Reference - Research topics by keyword or phrase including "sports history," "olympic history," "sports and recreation."
EBSCOhost - Multi-subject database of scholarly, magazine, and newspaper articles. Limit your search by selecting full text and indicating a date range. Also, use the subject headings on the left column within search results to find more articles.
Encyclopaedia Britannica - An online encyclopedia with entries on the histories of individual sports as well as biographical information on individual athletes.
Gale Virtual Reference Library - A collection of online reference books, useful for background information; contains historical and contemporary sports topics.
Google Scholar
Find
scholarly journal articles and books. Not all are available full-text. Articles
not in the library's collection can be ordered via Interlibrary
Loan.
Historical New York Times - Search for articles published in the New York Times from 1851 through 2007. For NYT articles from 2008 to the present, use the New York Times website.
JSTOR - A collection of journal articles on subjects such as history, sociology, and business. Includes some articles on history of sport topics.
LexisNexis Academic - Enter sports-related search term(s) in the search box. Note: historical information more than 10-15 years old will not be available in this database.
SBRNet - Market research and industry news covering the sporting goods and sports marketing industry. Data is provided by the National Sporting Goods Association, the U.S. Department of Commerce, and various sports governing bodies. Includes full-text articles from 14 magazines and newsletters. There's not much history here, but this database may be useful if recent sports statistics are needed.
