Biography in Context - A collection of online reference books focused on biography.

Credo Reference - Contains reference books useful for defining literary terms and movements, as well as social history.

Gale Virtual Reference Library - A collection of online books, good for overviews of authors.

Finding Background Information and Key Terms and Theories in Books

Bowman Library Catalog - Search by keyword or subject heading to find books in the Bowman Library collection. You can find literary criticism and explanation for many authors and their works. The Library has books of film criticism, as well as art history.

Research Databases

EBSCO - Our largest collection of scholarly journal, magazine, and newspaper articles; contains some literary criticism.

Historical New York Times - Full text of The New York Times back to 1851. Very useful for seeing how events and social movements were recorded at the time they occurred and for putting literary work, film, or artwork in context.

JSTOR - This collection of scholarly journals includes literary criticism

Literature Resource Center - Includes criticism of works of literature, as well as articles about particular literary movements and authors. A good place to begin your search.

Google Options

Google Scholar - Looks just like Google, but searches scholarly literature only. Note that the full text is not available for all articles. If full text is not available, you may order it via Interlibrary Loan.

Google Books - Use to search for and view Ebooks on the web. Note that some books offer only a partial view. If you want the entire book, you may order it via Interlibrary Loan.
