What
Are Course Reserves?
Reserves are items (books, videotapes, CDs, etc.) placed on special
shelves behind the Circulation Desk at the request of faculty members
who wish to make material available to more students by reducing the
length of the borrowing period. Items are normally placed on reserve
for the duration of a course (usually one semester). At the end of
the semester they are removed from reserve status and returned to
the professor or to the Library's circulating collection. |
What
Kinds of Materials are Placed on Course Reserve?
- Library Owned: Cataloged
materials including reference books, circulating materials, periodicals,
etc.
- Folder: Reading materials
(photocopies) provided by the instructor. Copyright clearance for
photocopies is the responsibility of the professor.
- Personal: Materials
provided by the professor from their personal collection.
- Permanent Reserve: Consists
of high-demand items and special materials.

What
is the Loan Period for Course Reserves?
- 2 hour reserve: item
must be kept in the Library and must be returned to the circulation
desk after 2 hours.
- Overnight reserve: item
can be taken out of the Library and must be returned to the circulation
desk 24 hours later.

How
Can Course Reserve Materials be Located?
- Reserve materials are
listed in ROSIE, the Library
Catalog, under Course Reserves and may be searched by Course or
Professor.
- If you are searching
by Professor, please enter the last name. (Example: Lopez)
- If you cannot locate
your course by professor, please search by course name or course
number.
(Example: Introductory Spanish 2 OR SPA 002)
- Click on your course.
Write down the call number(s) or title(s) of the item(s). Keep this
information for future reference.
- Reserve materials are
shelved at the Circulation Desk. Ask the staff member for assistance
in retrieving the material(s) you need.

What
is Required to Check Out Course Reserve Materials?
- A valid Menlo College
I.D. card must be presented when requesting course reserve material.
- A maximum of 5 Reserve
items can be borrowed at any given time.

Can
Course reserve Materials be Renewed?
- Reserve materials may
not be renewed by phone, email or on the web.
- Items not in demand
by other patrons may be rechecked out at the Circulation Desk.

Where
Should I Return Course Reserve Items?
- Return course reserve
items directly to a Library staff member at the Circulation Desk.
Patrons are responsible for the safe return of reserve items.
- Reserve items should
not be placed in the Circulation Desk bookdrop.
- If the Library is closed,
a reserve item be placed in the after-hours bookdrop.

What
are the Fines for Overdue Course Reserves?
- All reserve materials
are due at a specific hour. Late fines will accrue for each hour
items are overdue.
- Fines accumulate at
$1.00 per hour. Patrons are responsible for knowing the date and
time items are due back. The staff member checking out the item
will provide this information.
- Loan periods are fixed
and cannot be changed by the library staff. Fines are assessed to
encourage prompt return of materials. Fines accrue all days and
all hours the Library is open.

How
Faculty May Place Items on Course Reserve
- To place items on reserve,
faculty members must fill out a Reserve Request Form for each course.
Blank request forms are available at the Circulation Desk or may
be downloaded and printed (Reserve Request
Form).
- Please Note: Interlibrary
loan items cannot be placed on reserve.
- Please allow a minimum
of 2 days for processing.
- Items are processed
for reserves in the order in which the Reserve Request Forms are
received.
- Personal copies of
an item are placed on reserve at the owner's risk and must be collected
at the end of each semester.
- All materials are removed
from the reserves shelf at the end of each semester.

When
are Materials Removed from Course Reserves?
- Reserves will be available
until the last day of final exams.
- Reserve items are removed
at the end of each term.
- Personal copies are
returned, unless other arrangements are made with the professor,
and Library items are returned to Library shelves.
