Course Reserves

What Are Course Reserves?
Reserves are items (books, videotapes, CDs, etc.) placed on special shelves behind the Circulation Desk at the request of faculty members who wish to make material available to more students by reducing the length of the borrowing period. Items are normally placed on reserve for the duration of a course (usually one semester). At the end of the semester they are removed from reserve status and returned to the professor or to the Library's circulating collection.

What Kinds of Materials are Placed on Course Reserve?

  • Library Owned: Cataloged materials including reference books, circulating materials, periodicals, etc.
  • Folder: Reading materials (photocopies) provided by the instructor. Copyright clearance for photocopies is the responsibility of the professor.
  • Personal: Materials provided by the professor from their personal collection.
  • Permanent Reserve: Consists of high-demand items and special materials.

What is the Loan Period for Course Reserves?

  • 2 hour reserve: item must be kept in the Library and must be returned to the circulation desk after 2 hours.
  • Overnight reserve: item can be taken out of the Library and must be returned to the circulation desk 24 hours later.
