Room Assignments

The Housing staff assigns rooms to new students prior to the start of each semester. Continuing students sign up for their rooms during the housing selection process in April. Room and roommate requests will be honored to the extent that available space permits.

Room Changes

Room changes are not allowed during the first two weeks of each semester so that accurate rosters can be completed and changing roommates based on initial impressions can be avoided. In general, roommate changes are not encouraged. However, in extreme circumstances, students may petition to have a room change during the designated period. Room changes will be allowed if shifts can be made without undue disruption of other students and if conditions warrant the change. A mandatory mediation session will be required prior to any roommate change. Contact your Resident Director for details.

Students are not permitted to change rooms until they receive authorization from the Resident Director. Any student who moves prior to receiving such authorization will be subject to a $100 fine and may be required to return to his/her room. Only one room change is allowed per semester. While in the process of changing rooms, students are held responsible for the condition of both rooms until all paperwork is completed.

Consolidation Policy

In an effort to utilize bed space in the most effective and fair manner, students assigned to a double occupancy room in which there is a vacancy (no roommate) or in which a vacancy occurs prior to the 21st class day, must either pay a double-single room fee to keep the room as a double-single (if space is available) or agree to consolidate with another student (move in with another resident who has a vacancy or accept a new roommate).

Prior to the designated consolidation and room change period, the Office of Residence Life will send residents a notice highlighting the consolidation policy. Students with questions should contact their Resident Director.

If a student wishes to guarantee his/her room as a double-single (if space is available), he/she needs to complete the extra room charge form. A pro-rated amount will be billed to the student's account.

If a student chooses to consolidate, he/she will be required to either move in with another resident or have another resident move in with him/her. Every effort will be made to assure that a resident will not be required to move from his/her "living area" (area of current R.A.'s responsibility: defined as floor) to accomplish this consolidation. If two students live on the same floor, they will be consolidated. The Resident Director will meet with the two individuals to determine who has to move. If a student is the only one on his/her floor without a roommate, the student understands that a new roommate could be assigned at any time and the resident must be willing to accept the assignment of a new roommate. The room must be prepared to accommodate a second roommate within 24 hours of receiving notice.

If a vacancy occurs after the 21st class day, a resident will not be required to be consolidated during that semester. However, if the vacancy takes place in the fall semester, they will have a new roommate assigned to them for the spring semester.

Single Rooms

Continuing students may sign up for single or double-single (as space permits) rooms. Single rooms, large singles, and double-single rooms are billed at a higher rate than a double-occupancy room. Please contact the Office of Residence LIfe for current rate information. A limited number of single and double-single rooms are available. To be eligible for a double as a single, students must be a junior or senior and have a 3.5 cumulative GPA at the time of application, which must be maintained before and during the term of occupancy. Continuing students who sign up for singles and double-singles during room selection week in the spring receive first priority. Double as single rooms are contingent on occupancy - if demand exceeds supply, double as singles will not be offered.

Waiting List

When residence halls are full, the Office of Residence Life maintains a waiting list. All new assignments to and within the residence halls are made from students whose names are on this waiting list.

A waiting list is also maintained for single and double-single rooms. Students will be contacted in the order in which they sign up on the list. Please contact the Office of Residence Life at 543-3779 regarding this waiting list.
