Get Started With Financial Aid
College is a considerable investment, but several types of financial aid are available to help you pay for college, including merit-based scholarships, low-interest loans, government grants and on-campus work. Most students use a combination of these to cover their costs. Learn more about the various types of aid available.
To apply for financial aid, follow the steps below. If you have questions at any stage of the process, contact us at the Office of Financial Aid. We will be glad to help. You can also refer to our list of Financial Aid Terms.
Step 1: Apply for Admission
You must be fully admitted to Menlo before your financial aid can be completely processed. Haven’t applied yet? Get more information on how to apply.
Step 2: Get Your Federal Student Aid PIN
In order to apply for financial aid, you need a Personal Identification Number. Apply for one at www.pin.ed.gov.
You will use your PIN to apply for financial aid every year. Keep it in a safe place, and don’t give it to anyone.
Step 3: Fill Out Your Free Applications for Student Financial Aid (FAFSA)
Any time after January 1, 2014, complete the 2014-2015 FAFSA. To receive the best aid package possible, complete the FAFSA by March 2. Follow these steps:
- Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov. Log in, or if you are a first-time applicant, create a new FAFSA account. Keep your login information in a safe place for future use.
- Complete each step of the FAFSA. Are you a dependent? Do each step with a parent.
- Have your 2013 federal tax return handy! (If you’re a dependent, you’ll need both your tax return and your parent’s.)
- Select Menlo as your school of choice. Enter Menlo school code 00123600 in section 6.
If you have already completed the 2014-2015 FAFSA but did not include Menlo as your school of choice, go back to the FAFSA online (using your PIN) and make a correction to add Menlo (00123600).
After you complete your FAFSA, Federal Student Aid will transfer your FAFSA information to Menlo’s Office of Financial Aid.
Step 4: Review Your Award
If you have been admitted to Menlo, the Office of Financial Aid will send you an award letter stating what financial aid you can receive (your aid package). You have the option to accept all or part of your aid package.
Step 5: Return Your Award Letter
Once you receive your award letter, you must respond within two weeks. Return your award letter to the Office of Financial Aid, along with any other documents we ask for. Be sure to let us know about any outside scholarships or employer reimbursements you will be receiving.
In most cases, your financial aid award will be disbursed directly to your Menlo billing account near the beginning of each term.
