Majors/Programs

Menlo College's mission is to develop future leaders through a liberal-arts based business education that integrates academic study and fieldwork in a Silicon Valley environment unmatched in its potential for innovation.

Menlo College is a small, private, highly focused college. As stated in our mission, we concentrate on business education with a strong liberal-arts base. Every undergraduate student completes a strong liberal-arts based general education curriculum, an appropriate core curriculum covering the basics of their discipline, and advanced courses comprising their major area of specialization.

For the academic year 2011-2012 the following program areas will be available to entering students.

  • Accounting

    • Accounting Major, B.S. in Business

Accountants track and analyze the financial performance of organizations and provide managers with crucial information for decision making. Recent economic and financial crises reinforce the importance of trustworthy, fairly presented accounting information. Menlo College's Accounting program is designed to prepare a student for a career in accounting. Students study all of the main areas of financial and managerial accounting in order to have a thorough overview of the field which is complemented by a practical internship experience.

  • Entrepreneurship

    • Entrepreneurship Option in Management Major, B.S. in Business

Silicon Valley is known as the cradle of innovation. Hewlett-Packard, Google, Yahoo, Intel, and eBay, among others, all got their start here. If your goal is to launch your own business, and perhaps follow in the footsteps of the above companies, our Entrepreneurship program may be for you. The curriculum includes courses in opportunity assessment, entrepreneurial finance, and new venture strategy and marketing, along with a specialized entrepreneurship capstone course.

  • Finance

    • Finance Major, B.S. in Business

The dynamic world of global finance presents challenging career opportunities to the qualified college graduate, including venture capital, corporate finance, banking, consulting, or the financial markets. Students can focus on entrepreneurial finance, corporate finance, financial institutions, investments and real estate. The focused curriculum blends current trends in the real world and advancements in technology with financial theory and internship experiences.

  • Human Resource Management

    • Human Resource Management Option in Management Major, B.A. in Business

If you like working with people and have a penchant for detail, the human resource management option may be right for you. HR managers are responsible for the hiring, training, development and compensation of an organization's employees. They are often involved in strategic planning since, in today's knowledge based economy, people are typically an organization's most valuable resource. Courses in the option include benefits and compensation, staffing/training/development, employment law, and HRM strategy.

  • Individualized Option

    • Individualized Option in Management Major, B.A. in Business

Do you have your own unique career goal? Do you plan to work in a smaller organization where you manage multiple areas of activity? The Individualized Option acts in concert with the Management Core course sequence to provide the student with the most flexible business and management career preparation. Students select their own collection of major courses from an approved list following appropriate guidelines. This allows the graduate to obtain modest depth in several areas, or to create a unique package tailored to his/her own interests.

  • International Management

    • International Management Option in Management Major, B.S. in Business

Globalization and the rise of the market economy are the two most fundamental and radical shifts in the world today. This program deepens a student's understanding of the roots of international trade and commerce; the new challenges and opportunities associated with the emerging global economy; and the trends and conditions of international markets and international finance. A working knowledge of a foreign language complements courses focused on multinational business operations.

  • Management

    • Management is a very broad descriptor that can apply to a wide range of business activities and many types of organizations. Menlo College offers management programs within both the B.S. in Business and the B.A. in Business. Options, or areas of focus, include Entrepreneurship, Human Resource Management, International Management, Management Information Systems, Marketing Communications, and Sports Management. For the student who desires a generalist program, the Individualized Major permits tailoring courses to individual interests. Please see the descriptions of each of the option areas for more information.

  • Management Information Systems

    • Management Information Systems Option in Management Major, B.S. in Business

Organizations use computers for everything. Yet the pace of technology innovation keeps increasing, leaving most organizations wondering how to use systems effectively. That's where MIS comes in. An MIS professional understands both the business' needs and how technology can meet those needs, and then creates systems that work. Our MIS program prepares students to become skilled at both business analysis and technology development through applied learning experiences.

  • Marketing

    • Marketing Major, B.S. in Business

Marketers broadly help the organization focus on the 4 P's — Product, Price, Place and Promotion. They help identify and design needed products and services, determine appropriate pricing strategies, figure out how to deliver those products or services though appropriate distribution channels including the internet, and determine how to make customers aware of those products and services, and interested in them. Career possibilities include sales, product development, product management, advertising, and marketing research among others. Individuals with a strong marketing background are well equipped to become entrepreneurs developing their own businesses.

  • Marketing Communications

    • Marketing Communications Option in Management Major, B.A. in Business

We all remember a TV commercial, a print advertisement, or a web site that was so clever that it becomes permanently ingrained in our consciousness. The Marketing Communication program is a unique combination of management, marketing and communications courses that focus on the role of marketing communications within the larger business context. Considerable emphasis is placed on the creative aspects of marketing communications in courses such as advertising, public relations, and web design, all of which include applied projects.

  • Psychology

    • B.A. in Psychology

At various times, psychology has been considered the study of the human soul, the study of the human mind, and the study of human behavior. Some people study psychology empirically; others consider psychology to be an art. The Psychology program at Menlo College emphasizes the traditional liberal arts psychology courses, yet includes topical courses that explore the most current psychological issues such as sports psychology and human sexuality.

  • Real Estate

    • A curriculum option in Real Estate within the B.S. in Business, Management major is under development and should be available to students by fall 2012.

  • Sports Management

    • Sports Management Option in Management Major, B.S. in Business

Professional sports organizations are big business today. Behind the winning records and famous player names are many other employees and activities. The Sports Management program exposes students to all facets of the business of sports, including sports sponsorship relationships, team and league equity issues, labor and personnel management, and a wide variety of ethical and social issues facing business professionals in both professional and amateur athletics. The program prepares students for internal positions in sports organizations, public marketing, radio and television programming and events management.
