Memoir Writing | Biographical Writing | Story Telling | First Year Experience
The First Year Experience program helps incoming students bond with one another, with the campus, and the surrounding community. As the director of the First Year Experience, Dr. Thomas organizes interactive opportunities for students such as helping Redwood City run its Salsa Festival. Beginning with a class retreat, followed by a one-hour class once a week for nine weeks, the goal of the First Year Experience is for freshmen to feel at home in their new environment, both on campus and off. Thomas encourages students to understand and share the meaning of their stories so that they can be their best selves.

Thomas is interested in memoir writing, and has published her own memoir. She also enjoys telling stories and research, especially biographical. She has one published biography and she is working on another: The biography of Queen Adelaide, Queen Victoria’s predecessor. She has completed five postdoctoral fellowships, three at Oxford University, one at Cambridge University, and one at Yale University. Thomas enjoys being a student, having completed postdoctoral study at the following universities: University of Maine, University of Iowa, Bennington College, U.C. Berkeley, and Stanford University. Her four published books range from literary criticism to memoir and biography.
