ATHERTON – The Menlo College Athletic Department announced Wednesday that head men’s basketball coach Kevin Nosek, who in three seasons elevated the Oaks from a 4-22 finish to the California Pacific Conference Tournament title game, is leaving the program to take an assistant coaching position at his alma mater, UC Davis.

Nosek previously served on the Aggies bench as an assistant from 1999-03, helping the program to a 97-23 aggregate record during his initial tenure. A Davis native, Nosek played for the Aggies from 1996-99, helping lead the program to the 1998 NCAA Division II national championship. Menlo hired Nosek in July 2003 and, with little time to recruit, his initial squad finished 4-22. The Oaks upped their ledger to 13-14 and reached the Cal Pac Tournament semifinals the following season before enjoying a breakout campaign last year.

Menlo’s 17-11 record during the 2005-06 season was the program’s best finish in six years and highest win total since the 1998-99 Oaks won 18 games. Menlo missed an automatic berth into the NAIA Division II National Championships by a single game, falling to Holy Names, 86-69, in the Cal Pac Tournament title tilt. Menlo, which finished fourth in the Cal Pac standings during the regular season, defeated NCAA Division II schools San Francisco State and Notre Dame de Namur and eliminated regular-season conference champion Dominican, 64-49, in the postseason tournament semifinals.

Menlo finished the year ranked first among all NAIA Division II squads in total rebound defense (28.7 allowed per game) and Nosek’s Oaks were fifth in rebound margin (plus-8.5) and seventh in field goal percentage defense (.408). Forward James Gilkey was named to the All-Cal Pac Team for the second straight season while sophomore Bryon Wesley garnered conference Defensive Player of the Year honors.

“As a program we made positive improvements during the last three years and I’m most proud of the character of the student-athletes that we brought to Menlo,” Nosek said. “They are the finest group of young men I have ever been around and I will miss them dearly.”

Menlo also proved to be exceptional inside the classroom during Nosek’s tenure. This past academic year alone, Menlo accumulated a 3.2 team GPA and eight Oaks were named to the Dean’s List. Additionally, Gilkey earned his second-consecutive NAIA All-America Scholar Athlete award.

“Kevin was outstanding in helping develop men's basketball into a quality program. Most importantly, he brought integrity, enthusiasm and a team mentality to our department,” Athletic Director Caitlin Collier said. “He certainly enriched the college itself during his time here and we thank him for his great commitment.”

A search for Nosek’s replacement is currently underway.
