Celebrating 80 Years
As a young child, and then into my teens while growing up in Maryland, I vividly remember how excited I was at this time of year. It was a time of new beginnings...the changing of the season, the start of the school term in a new grade, the anticipation of kicking off all of the sports seasons, new friends, anticipation of the holidays and time with family.
This strongly parallels the excitement I feel today as we open the new fall 2007 term here at Menlo College, and prepare to celebrate Menlo's 80th anniversary. It is also with great anticipation that I see this as a time of new beginnings for Menlo College.
Since January 1st when I formally took the presidency, I have had the tremendous privilege of meeting people from all over the world who have expressed their esteem and commitment to this great institution. I have come to understand and highly revere the depth of what are affectionately known as the "Menlo Tradition" and the "Menlo Advantage."
The foundation of 80 years of historic greatness that has endowed Menlo College through its alumni and their incredibly varied success in business and industry—as well as through the wisdom and generosity of trustees, and the dedication of noteworthy faculty and staff—is our inheritance. It is now time to take a good, hard look at the unique quality of Menlo's relevance to this amazing and revolutionary region, and, as a result, the real opportunities we can offer our students, and how this must be key to how we shape the next season in Menlo's history.
To begin, our goal must be to prepare students for jobs that do not yet exist. Many of the jobs that are now in high demand did not even exist just a decade ago. And to be sure, much of what will be opportunity in the workplace for our graduating students in four years, and on the cutting edge of shaping business and industry—especially here in the Silicon Valley—has not yet been conceived. Therefore it is critical as an institution that we think differently than we did ten, or even four, years ago, and ensure that our students are well equipped for a world where the only constant is change, and where their skills will be distinctive and in high demand!
The philosophy that will be the cornerstone of a Menlo College education is the development of key characteristics in our students that will ensure a graduate's success in a rapidly changing environment. Among these attributes that will weave through the curriculum are entrepreneurship, innovative conceptualization, superb communication skills, critical thinking, strong team orientation, adaptation, multiculturalism, ethical behavior, social responsibility.
I look forward to the opportunity of deepening these ideas and others with you...as we remember the past, anticipate the future, and understand the meaning and value of the "Menlo Advantage."
