Getting Started
Obtaining a Login ID and Password
All workstations in Menlo's Academic Computing
facilities require user login and password. You may obtain this information
from the Academic Affairs Office, Student Service Center, or the Office
of Information Technology. Please remember to bring your valid student
ID, State Driver License, Picture ID Card, Passport, or Green Card, or
you will not be given the information you need to get started. First time
lab users will be required to acknowledge the Acceptable
Computer Use Policy. Once your identification has been verified,
you will be assigned a login, password, and e-mail address. Students using
campus computing facilities will adhere to posted rules at all times.
Getting Logged In
Follow these steps to log on to the PC workstations:
Find a PC displaying a small box that displays, "Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete to begin."
Press the CTRL + ALT + DELETE keys simultaneously. Then press ENTER.
Enter your user name in the first line of the "Logon Information" box. Press TAB
Enter your password on the second line.
Be sure the third line says 'MENLO'. If not, change this to 'MENLO'.
Click OK, the login process will begin. Log in takes about 10-30 seconds.
To access the programs made available to students click on the START button after you have logged in, and then select PROGRAMS. You will see a list of the applications available, as listed above.
Internet
Each student has full access to the World Wide Web through Menlo College's dedicated DS3 connection. To get on the Internet, select the NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR or INTERNET EXPLORER program from the PROGRAMS menu.
E-Mail
Each student has access to his or her personal e-mail account via the World Wide Web. Log on to http://webmail.menlo.edu from anywhere the World Wide Web is available. You will be prompted to enter your login and password; use the same login and password assigned to you for the computer labs. Select "students" from the list of servers. Once your login has been authenticated, your inbox will be displayed. You are now ready to use e-mail!
Your e-mail address is alias@irwin.menlo.edu (your alias is your first initial followed by your last name).
File Storage Services
Each registered Menlo student is allocated
a secure storage folder which can be accessed from any of the three PC
labs. Your storage folder is located on the HOME volume (H-drive). Your
HOME folder may store up to 50MB of personal files. Files may also be
stored on 3.5" PC formatted floppy diskettes or USB Flash drives.
Diskettes and flash drives may be purchased from the campus bookstore.
It is strongly recommended that students keep backup copies of all work,
so as to ensure the safety of their data. DO NOT save any files on workstation
hard disk drives (e.g. Desktop or My Documents). Files saved on hard disk
drives will be lost.
A Note on Viruses
Viruses are commonly found in computer networking environments. All workstations in the computer labs are protected by antivirus software. If you encounter a virus warning while working in the labs, and are unsure about how to proceed, please consult the computer lab monitor on-duty.
When You Leave Menlo...
All graduating and discontinuing students will have their network accounts disabled and all associated files deleted. Please be sure that prior to leaving Menlo College, all of your important documents and e-mail messages are saved to a floppy diskette, burned on a CD, or printed out, as you will be unable to retrieve these in the future.
Call the helpdesk at 650-543-3830 if you have any questions.
