This year Menlo's Student Government, Resident Student Representative position is taking on new responsibilities to help create better communication between students and administration in regards to on campus housing and dining.

Marissa de Orona '18 is the current Resident Student Representative and is looking for residents to take part in improving student life on campus.

"As the resident student representative I am trying to make sure Menlo is a place we can call home, the Food Committee and the Residence Hall Association are places for residents to come and voice their concerns. The food committee has talked to Sodexo about making sure label signs are available and increase the options for certain dietary needs. The residence hall association is focusing on improving communication between the student affairs office and the residents. We spend the majority of our academic lives on campus, so making this place our home is the most important thing to me and the associations." -Marissa de Orona '18

If you have any suggestions, questions, comments or concerns in regards to residential life or the dining halls, Marissa can be reached via menlo email:

This past weekend Menlo students got to spend a SERV day helping out with Habitat for Humanity in San Francisco.

Junior Destiny Serna '17 shared with us her experience volunteering.

"On Saturday, we went to San Francisco/Daly City and we got to see what goes into building houses. We were split into teams with specific tasks, and the staff taught us the skills we needed to do our part. My main task was to climb scaffolding and paint the higher parts of the house. Climbing and standing on the scaffolding was scary, but I literally took my volunteering experience to new heights. I'm so thankful to have had the opportunity to participate." -Destiny Serna '17

This past summer Katie Lathrop held two internships at San Jose State University: Events and Marketing Intern for Associated Students and Housing and Residential Life Intern. For the Events and Marketing internship, Katie managed their social media accounts, worked New Student Orientation, and prepared for upcoming events at SJSU. As for her Housing and Residential Life Internship, she created marketing materials for Resident Assistant (RA) recruitment, participated in the Training Development Committee who creates the RA training schedule and goals, and was on the Student Staff Selection Committee who creates the hiring and recruitment process for new RAs. Katie is excited to take some of what she learned at her internship and put it to use as the Head Resident Assistant at Menlo this year. She said, “It was so amazing to work in the offices that are my two passions: event planning and residential life while using the knowledge I gained from my marketing classes at Menlo. I am so happy that I was able to work on such an awesome campus and meet some amazing people. I learned so much about Higher Education and I can’t wait to futher my career with all the skills and ideas I learned over the summer.” #MenloInterns ... See More »See Less »

One of Menlo's many East Coasters, Markyece Smart '19, has been adjusting to West Coast vibes while still practicing and pursuing his passion for Rock Climbing.

"I first got into rock climbing through an internship my high school offered at a local rock climbing gym. It wasn't until my birthday when I got my first pair of rock climbing shoes that my passion really ignited. I started competing 5 months into climbing and I met a lot of people within the climbing community that pushed me to advanced in climbing beyond points I never thought were possible for me. The transition from the East coast to the West Coast has been an interesting transition. The only thing I miss from back home is the community of the climbing gym. I was really comfortable and I knew people from all the gyms near me. I love outdoor climbing, and the West is hard to beat. All of the beautiful lines and bullet hard rock is amazing. The east coast also has a lot of great climbing, but it's nothing compared to out here." -Markyece Smart '19
